St. Petersburg police revealed an illegal connection to electric networks in order to steal electricity for mining. The persons involved in this scheme have already been identified.
Miners placed their equipment in the abandoned building of the former poultry farm in the village of Leskovo, located in the Leningrad Region, as well as in the premises of the recreation center in the village of Roshchino. Several locations with mining equipment in residential premises were also identified.
“The employees of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region identified individuals who may be involved in illegal profit-making by unauthorized connection to electric networks for the purpose of cryptocurrency mining. The attackers used modified electric meters programmed to underestimate the readings of energy consumption, ”the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs said in an official statement.
Law enforcement agencies report that more than 20 searches were carried out, during which more than 2 million rubles were seized, more than 100 modified electric meters, means for sealing the meters and seals themselves, as well as devices for opening and modifying the meters. To ensure the evidence base, the phones of intruders were also seized, in which the correspondence was preserved.
