“The employees of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region identified individuals who may be involved in illegal profit-making by unauthorized connection to electric networks for the purpose of cryptocurrency mining. The attackers used modified electric meters programmed to underestimate the readings of energy consumption, ”the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs said in an official statement.

Law enforcement agencies report that more than 20 searches were carried out, during which more than 2 million rubles were seized, more than 100 modified electric meters, means for sealing the meters and seals themselves, as well as devices for opening and modifying the meters. To ensure the evidence base, the phones of intruders were also seized, in which the correspondence was preserved.
