Window unit designed to suppress external noise even with the sash open

Researchers have introduced a prototype smart window unit with built-in noise reduction system.

In hot weather, we often want to open the window to let in a pleasant breeze. Sometimes this is prevented by street noise, which not only interferes, but can also be hazardous to health. Now a team from Nanyang Technological University is proposing to solve this problem with the help of an integrated active noise reduction system.

Scientists have built into the frame an array of 24 small speakers and a sensor that picks up regularly recurring sound waves. In the presence of noise, the system automatically determines its intensity, range and fundamental frequencies, and then generates a mirror signal to absorb incoming waves.

As a result, the level of noise entering the room is reduced by 10 dB. In fact, this is the difference between heavy traffic at a distance of 90 m (60 dB) and quiet time in the city (50 dB).

The effectiveness of the system does not depend on the size of the room, and its power and characteristics can be adjusted by changing the distance between the speakers.

Recall that in the wound we also reported on the development of the world’s first personal sound projector.
